Layout Problems

Screencap of issue
For some reason, the layout is suddenly looking bizarre to me. I'm running Win7 Ultimate and Firefox 3.6.8 Ennui 23:33, 26 August 2010 (EDT)
Strange. I'll look into this. I changed the CSS for the Wiki a little over a week ago… is it possible that you haven't been to the Wiki in that time and that this is the first time you're seeing the new changes? Or have you already been here since the changes, but this is the first time that the layout has looked messed up like that? It'll help me figure out what the cause is if I know that. Thanks! TiredChildren 07:16, 27 August 2010 (EDT)
Oh, one cause that I just thought of… Are you using some kind of ad blocker on Firefox? I recently set up a sponsorship for Fallen Regime, and we have a vertical banner ad for FR up on the right side of the Wiki now. I noticed in your screenshot that it's not there. The way the CSS is set up, that banner pushes the main content div over to the left. It's possible that an ad blocker would see that ad, block it, and because the ad isn't there the main content div would get aligned incorrectly. Just trying to troubleshoot what might be causing the issue before I start making any changes to the code. TiredChildren 07:21, 27 August 2010 (EDT)
It's likely both. I think it is my first time since those changes but I am also using Adblock Plus. Ennui 09:35, 27 August 2010 (EDT)
Well cool, that definitely helps then. I think I know what part of the code is triggering AdBlock to block it, so I'll either change the code so that the banner shows up regardless of whether or not someone is using an ad blocker, or I'll change the CSS so that the page doesn't shift if the ad does get blocked. Or actually I'll do both. Thanks for letting me know it was getting jacked up! TiredChildren 11:16, 27 August 2010 (EDT)
Yeah, no problem! I look forward to its fix 'cause the website looks real ugly right now haha Ennui 11:27, 27 August 2010 (EDT)
Fixed it. I installed Adblock Plus to test it, and I think we're all set. I had the div with the ad named bannerAd, and now I've changed it to sidevertical. The name of the div was triggering Adblock Plus, so renaming it scoots around the block and fixes the layout. Let me know if you're still seeing a jacked up page. Thanks again! TiredChildren 21:56, 28 August 2010 (EDT)

Indent reset. Yeah the alignment is fixed now and you have gotten passed my adblock plus. However, the reduction of our wiki space is still affected. Best example I can think of is the Popbot page. Not sure what could be done about this. Ennui 16:25, 2 September 2010 (EDT)

What I've been doing is just reducing the width of images on the pages by about 100px. Then they still are large enough to be relevant, but don't take up as much space. I just changed the Popbot logo to be 250px instead of 350px, and I think it looks alright now. TiredChildren 17:08, 2 September 2010 (EDT)
Example of squished text
Example of image size issue
Yeah that looks a lot better. I also put the image after the redirect info to help. However... Don't mean to be a pain in the ass, but here's another example of where the text is compromised or the template size is off. Ennui 19:25, 2 September 2010 (EDT)
Alright, I got the file page issue sorted. The default for an image preview is 800px, and I was able to edit it so that it will always show the preview of images on the file's page at less than 650px.

As for text not having a lot of room when it's on the left of an image, there's not much I can do to fix that. In order to get the site to look the same regardless of what browser / operating system a user is viewing it with, I had to switch to a fixed width for the wrapper. And since 90% of the users of the internet are still using resolutions of 1024x768 (I have no idea how that number could still be 90%, but it apparently is), I had to make the page wrapper 1000px. Unfortunately, that means that those of us with higher resolutions get extra space on the left and the right sides. That's the price that we have to pay in order to try to stick to web standards.

And don't worry about being annoying. I know that you're just trying to get the site to look correct, and I definitely appreciate you looking out for stuff that's jacked up. TiredChildren 20:54, 2 September 2010 (EDT)

Cool. I figured it had something to do with that (really? 90%? lol) but wasn't sure. I'll just go ahead and make the thumbnails smaller as you did with Popbot and hopefully that'll make things look a little more streamlined. Cheers! Ennui 13:07, 3 September 2010 (EDT)

"Popbot" in Sidebar

would one of the mods please change the Popbot link on the main page and the left side bar to link directly to: Popbot. redirects are a bane. thanks! Bubo, one page at a time... 22:49, 19 November 2010 (EST)

Alright, sidebar navigation changed. Sorry for seeing this so late. I need to figure out a way to make edits to Talk pages more obvious so that they don't get overlooked. TiredChildren 01:00, 12 January 2011 (EST)

Languages

Should we put a link on this main page somewhere that links to alternative languages (i.e.: 日本語3AWiki? I was going to just add it myself, but wasn't sure where the best place would be. Ennui 02:41, 18 January 2011 (EST)

I'm going to probably put up tiny little flags in the top right of all pages that links to the other languages. We'll have a little Japan flag and a US flag. Thought about putting a Union Jack instead of the US, but since I think words like "color" (vs. "colour") and "organize" (vs. "organise") are more universal for the core of the threeA audience, US flag it is! I'll try to get them up sometime this week. TiredChildren 21:35, 18 January 2011 (EST)
Oh cool! I really dig the flags idea. Actually, you should create one of those half flags that are cut diagonally with the US Flag on one side and the Union Jack on the other :) All bases covered. Ennui 19:51, 19 January 2011 (EST)
Language flags added. And you got your wish for the split flag! ^_^ The only issue with the way that I added the flags is that it says "English" and "Japanese" when you hover over the flags. I was going to put 日本語 for when you hover over the Japanese flag, but the fact that the Wiki uses a PHP file to parse that part of the page prevented me from entering anything other than Latin characters. But it should be obvious what those are for because they're pretty universal on the web. TiredChildren 11:35, 20 January 2011 (EST)
