Gaming Traffic Fragmentation: A Growing Opportunity for Affiliates

Supplied by a partner

30 September 2026

Gaming site traffic in 2026 is still heavily concentrated among a few major platforms, but the data shows a clear shift in recent years, with considerable growth in non-traditional sources. Twitch remains the top gaming site in the US, with 290.8 million monthly visits as of August 2026, according to Semrush. However, Twitch's growth is slowing – traffic was down 13.05% month over month in August, while growing just 1.17% year over year. The market's top sites by traffic share as of June 2026 included Steam, Nintendo, PlayStation, Poki, and Minecraft.net, per OneLittleWeb.

This fragmentation of gaming traffic is significant for affiliate marketers, as it implies that relying solely on the biggest platforms may no longer be an effective strategy. Mobile-first, retention-focused marketing remains dominant in the gaming sector, so organic search and direct traffic are still important. Semrush data shows 70% of total gaming site traffic is direct, while Similarweb reports direct visits made up 71.4% of visits to online gaming sites in June 2022, with organic search accounting for 19.4%.

However, gaming publishers and affiliates do not need to build organic search from scratch. Review and comparison SEO remains a major source of affiliate-referred first-time depositors, accounting for 44% of FTDs in 2026, according to Track360. While creators are still a smaller share at 13%, they represent high-growth influencers that are increasingly important for traffic and conversions. Affiliate marketers should not overlook accepted sources, such as AI assistants, which are beginning to refer measurable traffic, though still under 1%.

One of the biggest opportunities for affiliates in 2026 is building growth through Google Discover, which in one analysis was estimated to account for 50% of all tech and gaming traffic in Raptive's network. Between 2025 and 2026, Google Discover referrals to gaming publications rose 138%, per separate reporting from GamesBeat. Publications not yet optimized for Discover should start by building AMP-compatible articles, including visually rich content with minimal text, and ensuring clear meta descriptions and titles with keywords likely to trigger in Discover carousels.

Affiliates need little prompting to go where their audience is, and in 2026 that increasingly means streaming, short video, and community channels. N1 Partners writes that affiliate traffic acquisition, rather than SEO, is the data-driven core model, but still likely to be complemented by brand development and product positioning.

Push notifications, Telegram bundles, and a focus on Tier-2 and Tier-3 market opportunities round out the short- and medium-term traffic diversification strategies that are enabling top affiliates to grow amidst the 2026 breakdown of gaming audience concentration. The growth opportunity is even bigger than one might think – estimates are that TikTok and YouTube Shorts appear to be performing particularly well in 2025, especially in terms of engagement.

Moving forward, gaming affiliates should approach traffic as a portfolio of sources, rather than focusing on quarter-to-quarter performance of a single inbound channel. Owning direct audiences, cross-promoting between content types and creators, and refining product positioning strategies into email marketing campaigns, community content, and social media communications will yield compounding returns. Affiliates that build around high-intent content, audience retention, and a diversified, performance-based approach to driving traffic from many channels will be best positioned for long-term planning and sure growth in 2026 and 2027.
