How to Play Blackjack Properly

Everyone's favorite card game, blackjack, is as well-loved as poker. It is also known as "21." There is this traditional game of luck in all casinos. Its biggest asset is that winning probabilities are very high if you play some proven blackjack betting tips.

How to Play Blackjack Online

The most common version of the game uses up to six decks of 52 cards. The dealer draws cards from a shoe. Each player's goal is to beat the casino by getting 21 points or achieving as close to that as one can.

In order to learn how to play blackjack properly, one must first learn how to count card values:

  • An Ace counts 1 or 11. When added to other cards to equal 21, it counts 11.
  • Face cards (J, Q, K) and 10s are counted as 10.
  • The value of all other cards is their face value.
  • Suits do not count in classic blackjack.

A hand consisting of an Ace + 10-value card is best, better than any other hand whose total is 21.

Ways to Win in Blackjack

A player can win in one of two manners:

  • Get a higher overall than the dealer without exceeding 21.
  • Cause the dealer to bust by exceeding 21.

If the player receives 21 or fewer and the dealer busts, the player is the winner. If they both receive the same amount, it's a push and the bet is returned. If no one busts, the hand with the higher total wins.

Starting the Game and Payouts

First, the dealer will ask to bet and deal one card to all players. The procedure is replicated in a way that the players possess two cards, while the dealer possesses one (two in American blackjack, though face down).

Players may request additional cards ("hit"). If their point total exceeds 21, they lose. Pairs are split into two hands. The dealer must draw until he has a minimum of 17 points.

Payout Rules:

  • 1:1 if they have a higher point score than the dealer.
  • 3:2 (1.5:1) for a natural blackjack.
  • Push (bet returned) if they have the same number of points.

Variations of Blackjack

Besides the classical one, there are several well-known variations:

  • Baden-Baden – two decks are used. In case of a blackjack by the dealer, all are lost instantly. A player also wins with six cards in total value 21 or less.
  • Spanish Blackjack – tens are removed from the deck. If the player and dealer both have 21, the player is a winner. Dealer has to draw if they hold an Ace and a six.
  • Pontoon – 21 made with five cards rewards 2:1. Players must take a card if they are below 14 points. A push results in a dealer win.
  • Progressive Blackjack – the original Ace that is dealt may qualify a player for the jackpot.
  • Blackjack Switch – two hands are dealt to players and players can switch one hand's cards to the other hand. The dealer must draw on a soft 17. There is a special "super bet" option.
