Robots, figures, art toys and the craft of collecting

Dazzle was never camouflage in the ordinary sense. The hard-edged, clashing panels came from naval painting, where the aim was not to hide a ship but to confuse an observer's guess at its heading and speed — geometry against a rangefinder rather than colour against a background. Lifted onto a toy robot, the pattern does the opposite job and does it well: it makes the shape harder to read at a glance, which on a shelf reads as motion.

Putting that scheme in pink is the joke and the point at once. The pattern's logic survives any palette, so a colourway that could never exist on a battlefield still looks like a military finish, because what the eye recognises is the panelling and not the hue. It is the clearest demonstration in the whole range of how much of a paint scheme is drawing rather than colour.
